Komen 3-Day For The Cure season... for some definitions of "halfway". Six events have been held. Nine have yet to be held. But because the 3-Day organizers scheduled a four-week gap between the first six and the last nine, in some senses we're "halfway". The reason for the gap is multi-fold: Labor Day weekend falls in the gap, as do the Jewish High Holy Days. And so does September 11. Next year, though, there will be no gap. Just an odd week off here and there. You can see the full schedule of 3-Day events for 2010 and 2011 here.

So, with that in mind, and with the next nine walks coming up fast -- Seattle is this weekend, for example -- it's not too early to start thinking about 2011. If you're already planning on doing some city in 2011, I'd like to invite you to take part as a member of a special team that will be walking in Atlanta in October of 2011... and, if we can make it work, will have some members walking in the San Francisco Bay Area walk in September of 2011.

What makes this team, or 'teams' if you count the two walks as two separate teams, special is that few of the members know each other in person. We have no work-related or family-related or college-related or church-related thread joining us. About the only thing we all have in common is that we're dedicated users of social media, especially Twitter. There's a large gaggle of 3-Day crew members and walkers who all post to Twitter on every aspect of the 3-Day imaginable, from fundraising to training walks to blisters and on-event experiences. Collectively, these folks are often known as the "3 Day Tweeps".

Each weekend, if you keep an eye out for the Twitter hashtag #the3day, you can follow whomever is walking a 3-Day event that weekend. Sometimes the tweets are pretty basic, like "Just got to Pit 4" or "It's RAINING OMG wah", but sometimes they're a bit more exciting, like "Just passed Bret Favre in the lobby of the hotel all us walkers are staying in the night before the walk". (That really happened, by the way.) But in general, it's an outstanding community, full of people helping one another out with motivation, fundraising suggestions, moral support, training ideas, you name it. If you're not really into the whole Twitter thing, following hundreds of celebrities and stuff, that's okay -- you don't strictly speaking HAVE to have "drunk the Twitter kool-aid" as it were. It wouldn't be a bad idea to sign up for a Twitter account even if you just use it for #the3day posting, but no one is twisting your arm. We'd like to get people for the team who are active on Twitter helping out and cheering each others on -- and we assume that your reason for joining would be that you want to receive this kind of support and pay it forward. Even though, for the most part, you'll be supporting relative strangers that you won't meet in person until the actual event.

The purpose of this Livejournal post is to encourage members of the 3-Day family on Twitter -- and anyone else who uses social media services like Facebook and who doesn't have a local team to train with and fundraise with and walk with -- to consider all coming to Atlanta in 2011. We've already got five members of the Atlanta team, three of whom are crew participants and two of whom are walkers, but we expect to get a lot more as the 2010 season winds its way onward and especially once the last 2010 walk has been held. You can join the team any time you want by visiting http://www.the3day.org/goto/teamtwitteratl or http://www.the3day.org/goto/teamtwittersfo. Right now, I'm the only registered member of the San Francisco Team Twitter crew, but if you're a West Coast resident who doesn't want to come all the way east to walk in Atlanta, you can walk with me and anyone else in your situation in the San Francisco Bay Area 3-Day.

Because these teams are really only open to people who are really committed and who understand that you're expected to be an active online voice during the 2011 training and fundraising season, we've established passwords for these teams. If you visit either of the two team pages linked in above and click "Register to join team" you'll be asked for a password. I'll be happy to supply the password on request -- just send me an email via a Twitter direct message at jayfurr or ask my co-captain, Caitlin Thayer, at ctinct. Or you can send me an email to my personal email: jay at furrs.org (address munged to prevent spam). If you sign up soon, you can use the discount code "CURE2011" to get $35 off the registration fee of $90. (The registration fee goes toward your meals, t-shirt, and other event expenses so as much of the money raised via fundraising as possible can go toward the actual purpose of the event, finding a cure for breast cancer.)

So there you have it -- ready to sign up? We look forward to hearing from you and having you as a part of "Team Twitter ATL", "Team Twitter SFO", or BOTH!

comments
