From the "Things You Didn't Quite Realize About The Breast Cancer 3-Day" Department...

While I knew that we camp out during the 60-mile walk and that this year we'll be camping at the same site Friday night and Saturday night so no one has to break down 2000+ tents and ship them off somewhere else and set them up again all in one day, I did not know that the tents are all bright pink or that the tents are used for one weekend each and then donated to local Girl Scouts.

I guess the latter factoid makes sense since it's easier to just buy new tents and set them up and use them and give them away than it would be to store them all year until 3-day season, transport them from city to city, clean them out after each event, etcetera, etcetera.

I imagine some people leave some pretty nasty messes inside their tents and no one would want to use a tent that someone else had spilled a gallon of Gatorade in and then not cleaned up. :)

Furthermore, I imagine that if you're ordering fifty thousand tents at one go you can get each one for a pretty reasonable cost.

If you google for "pink tents" and "girl scouts" in the same search you get a lot of funny stories about the tents. I particularly liked one poster who noted that there was *no* way the Boy Scouts would steal 'em.
