jayfurr: (3-Day)

I'm sitting in the Burlington (Vermont) airport on a very rainy Thursday morning, waiting for my 6 am flight to Washington (Dulles) for the 3-Day. The event doesn't actually start until tomorrow morning... check-in opens at 5:30 am at the Potomac Mills outlet mall in Woodbridge. Nonetheless, I'm taking the first flight out this morning; the first flight is the least likely to be delayed.

I'm going to spend part of today hanging out with my college friend and 3-Day teammate, Sandy Bryant. We'll have lunch in Fairfax and then I have to get on down to Woodbridge and turn in my rental car early because of something cool that came up yesterday. I was shopping for last-minute stuff when my phone rang and the caller turned out to be a fellow DC walker I'd 'met' on the event website's message boards. At the last minute one of the people slated to serve as a flag carrier during the opening ceremonies had backed out and my caller (Mollie S.) had been asked to find a replacement. For some reason she thought of me, called, explained that it would require me to be at the mall in Woodbridge by 4:30 pm today, and got a prompt 'you bet!' back.

Should be kind of cool. If you want to see what the flag procession looks like, go to http://08.the3day.org and click on 'event info'. If you pick, for example, the 2008 San Francisco walk and look at the event photos you'll see the flag carriers coming in through the crowd at the opening ceremonies and then standing on the stage during the welcoming speech. I have no idea which of the pink inspirational banners I'll get to carry but it'll be fun taking part regardless.

Now, God grant that both I and my big 35-pound duffel bag with all my gear and clothing and so forth make it to DC without any problems.
