Carole's Birthday...
Oct. 8th, 2008 09:19 pm... would have been more enjoyable if the 1988 Honda Accord we've been using as a second car (and which mostly gets left at the airport when I'm out of town traveling) hadn't blown a timing belt on the way to pick up her birthday cakes at the fancy baker in town.
But other than that, it worked out okay. Hey, we even got a Happy Birthday brownie sundae sent to our table at Friendly's after taking the almost-certainly-dead Accord to our favorite mechanic. In one of those coincidental weird things, we ran into the mechanic, Al, and his wife, Ann, at Friendly's after we left their shop. Apparently we'd both headed directly there. They knew it was Carole's birthday because we told them it was the second time in 11 years that we'd had a car die on us on her birthday. They were startled to see us and then apparently had a word with their waitress because at the end of our meal here came the clapping singing waiters with the brownie sundae. Amazingly nice of Al and Ann!

When we got home we didn't have lot of room left over for the two fancy cakes I'd ordered but we did our best. I gave Carole a couple of Charles Stross books ("The Atrocity Archives" and "The Jennifer Morgue") that I haven't read but which came heavily recommended by science fiction fans I know. I hope they're all they're cracked up to be.
At the end of dessert our lovely little emergency backup cat, Starlight, jumped up on Carole's lap to wish her Happy Birthday:

Date: 2008-10-09 09:26 pm (UTC)I can heartily recommend the Stross books. Read The Atrocity Archives a few months ago and just finished The Jennifer Morgue. The protagonist is a computer geek and Stross just nails the experience of being a techie in a large organization.
