"Friday Night: 60 Miles" Fundraiser
Jun. 17th, 2010 07:28 amTomorrow night around 8 pm my wife's gonna let me out of the car at the US/Canada border in a little pipsqueak border crossing called Alburgh, Vermont. She's gonna head home and go to bed or stay up all night watching downloaded episodes of "Pop Up Video" or whatever it is she does. I'm gonna start walking, backpack, headlamp, and all. Sixty miles later -- and I estimate somewhere between 15 and 20 hours later, depending on my walking speed -- I'm going to arrive at our house in Richmond, Vermont. Meteorological summer begins this weekend so I'll have the shortest night and the longest day, near about, and to make matters even better the forecast is for excellent weather: clear, calm night around 60 and warm day in the mid-to-high eighties. I'm looking forward to it.
I'm going to do this because no one seems very impressed any more by the idea of my walking 60 miles in three days as part of a Susan G. Komen breast cancer walk -- I mean, I've done it before, so have lots of other people, so what's so impressive, etcetera. But I figure doing the whole distance in ONE day -- straight through -- is somewhat more impressive. Perhaps some people who haven't donated will go "okay, he's absolutely crazy, but you sort of have to admire his commitment to the cause" and will donate a dollar per mile or something. It couldn't hurt, anyway.
If you want to follow my progress as I walk (unlikely, since the bulk of it will be happening overnight), I'll be pulling out my cell phone and posting a Twitter update every five miles or so. You can read them at http://twitter.com/jayfurr or see them on Facebook if I'm on your friends list there. I'll also be recording a GPS track as I go to post later and my Droid will be periodically updating my location at http://www.furrs.org/location.htm if you want to see where I am.
That being said, it is all for a good cause. Clearly, walking alone doesn't cure breast cancer -- but with promising new drugs on the horizon (including a breast cancer vaccine that was announced at the Cleveland Clinic recently) needing funding for clinical trials, anything I can do to help raise said funding is worth it. I'm grateful for any donations people wish to send in and if I can reach my overall fundraising goal of $6,900 I'll actually walk three 3-Day walks this year: DC, Tampa Bay, and one to be determined if I can raise the remaining $2023 I need to hit my goal.
My donation URL is http://www.the3day.org/goto/jayfurr -- please pass the word on to anyone you know who might be interested in helping out.
