Twin Cities
Jun. 21st, 2010 07:28 pmRandom money-grubbing post of the day: despite my failed attempt at walking sixty miles in under 24 hours this past weekend, I'm still game to try to walk three Susan G. Komen 3-Day For The Cure events this year. As I've said before, I've already raised around $4,900 and need $6,900 total -- only $2,000 more -- to walk three cities. In the end, obviously, the goal is to raise as much money as possible for the fight against breast cancer, not to walk my legs to stumps, but the theory is that my willingness to walk my legs to stumps should motivate you to reach for your bankroll and simultaneously shout "YES! WE MUST SAVE SECOND BASE!"
Well, my schedule for August is coming together, and it looks like I'll have two business trips (one to South Carolina and one to Illinois) bracketing the weekend when the Twin Cities 3-Day is held up in Minneapolis/St. Paul. I could simply fly to my South Carolina customer, fly directly to Minneapolis/St. Paul, walk the 3-Day, then continue on to Illinois and my customer there. The point being, obviously, saving having to pay for the air fare myself, and furthermore, that I can only walk a 3-Day if it fits into my overall work schedule. This one would. I've never really stopped and said "Uff da! Ja, we must go walk Minnesota!" but my schedule is what it is -- I can't just drop everything any random weekend and go walk anywhere I like.
So I'm throwing this out there to everyone: if I can raise a third of the amount I still need to raise in the next two weeks -- around $700 -- I'll donate the same amount and my generous employer will match my donation, and I'll commit to walking the Lake Wobegon 3-Day.
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to do the sixty-mile overnight walk to its completion, but I'm hoping that those of you who contemplated donating might still be willing to do so. And if not, it's okay -- I've already raised a good bit this year and two cities' walks is better than none. At the end of the day, I simply want to do as much as I can for this worthwhile cause; it makes me feel really rotten when I think about all the lives cut short by that damned disease and I know we're growing ever closer to a cure or at least a vaccine. What good is it to care if I'm not willing to step up and try to make a difference?
You can help make that difference. My donation web page is http://www.the3day.org/goto/jayfurr if you're willing to help out. Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing to pitch in!
