In 22 hours (give or take), I'll begin the 2010 Washington, DC Susan G. Komen 3-Day For The Cure.
Essential facts:
1) I don't know how many people will be taking part, but my guess is between 2,000 and 3,000 walkers, of whom about 10% will probably be men.
2) The weather forecast is fantastic: sunny days in the mid-70s, nights in the mid-to-low 50s. Some people might not feel excited by the prospect of evenings and nights in that temperature range, but, then, they don't live in Vermont. To me, that's brisk. It's refreshing.
3) I will be walking as a solo walker, not part of any team. I will be sharing a tent at night with a walker named Danny, in from the the West Coast taking part in his first 3-Day (although the small team he's walking with have done it before), and who I've never met. I don't know how much time I'll be spending around him, though, because...
4) I have a personal goal to finish close to last each day. I speed-walked the Twin Cities 3-Day and finished way, way, way ahead of the pack of walkers each day, which was sort of fun and sort of depressing at the same time. It was fun knowing my legs and body were capable of walking in excess of 4 miles an hour for long periods of time with only minimal breaks, but on the other hand, I had to keep reminding myself that walking fast does not, in and of itself, cure breast cancer and I would really have been better off spending more time smelling the flowers and talking to my fellow walkers, especially those for whom a 20-mile daily walk is not a trivial matter.
5) I will be Tweeting during the event at http://www.twitter.com/jayfurr and posting Livejournal updates here at http://jayfurr.livejournal.com (and at the mirror, http://jayfurr.dreamwidth.org). I will also be posting photos from the event at the aforementioned blogs but also at http://picasaweb.google.com/jayfurr.
6) I'm very much looking forward to the event, especially since the horrible, rotten, miserable, achy, feverish grippe that I had on Sunday and Monday and most of Tuesday has mostly passed. I still feel a bit tired but I think I'm otherwise close to being over it.
And finally...
7) I would really appreciate your financial sponsorship in the form of a donation to Susan G. Komen 3-Day For The Cure. In the end, this event is not about moving 3,000 walkers on foot from Point A to Point B. It's about raising as much money as possible and raising awareness as much as possible in order that cures for various forms of breast cancer can be researched, tested, and made available. If you would care to donate, my individual donation page is here: http://www.the3day.org/goto/jayfurr -- all donations are tax deductible and you'll be sent a tax receipt via email once you donate.
Thank you all for your support and for your individual contributions to make the world we all live in a better place, whatever cause you may support.
Wish me luck!
