jayfurr: (3-Day Ambassador)
[personal profile] jayfurr
I'm pleased to report that things are coming along well for me vis-a-vis the 2011 Susan G. Komen 3-Day For The Cure season. I'm doing a lot of training -- in fact, I plan to leave work in a few minutes and walk home... 20 miles. (And I'm looking forward to doing that.) I'm ready to serve my turn as a crew team captain at the Boston 3-Day in a few weeks (garbage pickup crew FTW!). I've raised the minimum $2,300 to walk in the Atlanta 3-Day in October.

But... my fundraising is going nowhere for my other 2011 walk, the September walk in San Francisco. Last year I did well enough on fundraising that I was able to do three walks (Twin Cities, DC, and Tampa Bay) at $2,300 minimum per walk. But this year, people are justifiably nervous about the economy and after giving generously the last few years are starting to ask "Can I really afford all the charitable giving I've tended to do?" (You can donate at http://www.the3day.org/goto/jayfurr, if you are so inclined. Just saying.)

Friends are reporting the same issues. Some charities have, as one friend put it, seen giving go right "off a cliff". And as I've been saying repeatedly lately, the need for dollars hasn't gone down. Mammograms still cost money. Treatment still costs money. Research and clinical trials still cost money. And governmental cutbacks for agencies that provide women's health have been scaled back or been cut off entirely. I am really grateful that my health insurance covered Carole's mammogram last week because a lot of women simply can't afford one, or don't have access to anywhere they can get one.

I have raised $287 out of the $2,300 I need in order to walk the San Francisco 3-Day. A walk, I might add, which takes place in just 74 days. I'm not totally panicked at this point because I'm planning on matching every contribution made on my behalf out of my own pocket and my employer will match my donations... so instead of needing over $2,000, I "really only need" $671. If you think about it in terms of $25 donations, that's around 27 $25 donations. That's very do-able... in theory.

I'm incredibly grateful to those who have donated on my behalf for my prior walks in 2008, 2009, and 2010, even if they choose not to donate this year. I'm not mad at or annoyed at those who support other causes or support other walkers. I'm actually really glad to live in a country where so many people do take an interest in their communities and good causes.

I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping, on behalf of those who so desperately need hope in the fight against breast cancer, that some of those people will help me with mine. :)

Again, my donation URL is http://www.the3day.org/goto/jayfurr. You can download a paper donation form and mail in a check or you can use a credit or debit card and pay online. Either way, you'll get a receipt for your taxes.

Thank you in advance if you're able to help out.
